A New Mongolian Champ
Hakuho holds the Emperor's Cup while his father rejoices in traditional Mongolian garb.And the Emperor's Cup goes to Hakuho! The 21-year-old Mongolian, whose real name is Munkhbat Davaajargal, took the May tournament on Sunday after defeating Miyabiyama in a final showdown match. His father, the 1968 Olympic silver medalist in freestyle wrestling, was present for the win. If Hakuho can succeed in taking the July tournament, he'll be promoted to grand champion--sumo's highest position. That would make a total of 2 grand champions, both from Mongolia.
It seems that foreigners are taking over the world of sumo these days, but a rule made in 2002 states that sumo training stables cannot take on more than one foreign wrestler at a time. Of course, there are currently some stables with multiple foreigners because they fall under the dinosaur clause, but there are sure to be fewer foreign sumo athletes in the future.
