Facing Self-Esteem Issues
For us adults, life in Japan is sometimes on our self-images. I mean, most of us can't speak the language enough to express ourselves as freely as we'd like, a lot of us only have the Japanese reading skills of a shogakkusei (primary school student), and we are constantly surrounded by very thin people. Until now, I have been consoled by the belief that this attack on self-esteem didn't extend to my children, but I just discovered I was mistaken.Recently, Jared came to me and said, "Mom, I don't like my face." I was shocked. Jared has always been proud, if not slightly egotistical about his appearance. As a toddler, he constantly gazed into the mirror and smiled at himself. He even practiced posing for imaginary cameras in his free time. Up until lately, he was a photograph hog. What has happened? Is it normal for an 8-year-old boy to not like his face?
I assured him that his face was very handsome and asked him if the reason he was upset is because his face doesn't look Japanese. He didn't directly answer. I then asked if the kids at school make fun of his face. He said, "Sometimes." I let him know that if all the boys in his school had to honestly choose which of the other kids they wanted to look like, he would be the most popular choice. He seemed to feel a little better, but I am still worried.
(The picture displayed is a simple cell phone pic of Jared I happened to have here at work. Please let him know what you think.)

Hey there Jared,
I think you look like such a nice person. Try not to worry. It is a bit weird being so different to everyone around you. My favourite thing about your face is your smile! You always look so happy. I am sure that everyone who sees your smile, wants to be your friend. Don't change!
What a load of codswallop! Jared is gonna be a hearbreaker when he grows up. That is so not cool that his classmates make fun of his facial features. You have a great smile. Jared, mate you are awesome don't let small minded people get you down!
Hey Matey
Not that you want the comments of a guy. But even a guy that likes girls can see you're a good looking guy. DOn't worry about the teasing. As Mum said there are more people that want your face than dont want your face. If I had your looks I'd be happy. Be proud that your different...On a side note maybe learn rugby. One good punch up and all the kids will leave you alone ;-)...Just kidding. Stay strong. Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you!
Stay good mate
Pete
Thank you, guys. I feel a little bit happier now, but I'm a little bit embarrassed.
Thanks, everyone. Jared has a huge smile on his face and can't stop giggling since he read your comments, so I'd say he is feeling much better. :)
Hey, Jared, kids at school just don't know what to do when someone is different. Just think--you get to enjoy two whole different countries, while you're still a KID!
You're a lucky dog.
Cheers,
PGE
P.S. Howdy, Jared's mom--I'm back in bloggin' action, and should (I hope) come back to the Japanese class. Eventually. PGE
Thanks for the message, Peter. Jared really enjoyed it.
